By definition, an image and a picture are the same thing — a two-dimensional representation of some subject. Over the past few years, the photo industry has changed a lot due to the advent of digital cameras and all the new opportunities available to you for your pictures. I personally capture images with my digital camera and print pictures at my local Ritz Camera & Image store.

In the industry, the trend is moving towards images as being your digital file and pictures being your actual print. Just as with film, until you have your pictures printed, ANYTHING can happen! Although light doesn’t hurt your memory card or files, magnets and fat fingers do! A digital image can be deleted or corrupted and if you accidentally format your memory card, completely erased! It is to that point that I like to say: “It’s not a picture until you can hold it in your hand.”

Just as the term “Image” has evolved in the industry, pictures, or the amount of pictures being printed has changed as well. Digital photography allows us to do so much more than just printing pictures. You can create a photo book, you can add your photo to a photo gift, like a mug, shirt or even candy! You can also embrace the digital age and add your images to a DVD slideshow you can watch on your TV, No more albums!

The possibilities are endless when it comes to the amount of creative products available for displaying your images. Whether it’s on a mug, in a book, or just a print, it’s not a picture until you can hold it in your hand.
